What Is a Contusion?

A contusion is a soft-tissue injury caused by blunt force, such as a bicycle crash or contact with pavement. The impact damages small blood vessels beneath the skin without necessarily breaking the skin. Bruising, tenderness, swelling, or changing skin color may appear, and medical records can document the injury after an accident.

Key Takeaways About Contusion

  • A contusion usually affects tissue beneath intact skin.
  • Photographs and medical records can help document its progression.
  • A contusion is not the same as an open wound.

How Contusion Works

A contusion develops when blunt force damages small blood vessels below the skin. Blood and fluid can collect in nearby tissue, which may produce discoloration, tenderness, or swelling. The skin can remain unbroken even when deeper tissue has been affected.

In a bicycle accident claim, the appearance of a bruise may change as the injury develops. Medical records can describe the location, symptoms, and clinical findings. Medical records may also connect the reported injury to the crash when the timing and examination support that link. Bodily injury describes the broader physical harm, while a contusion identifies one particular injury within that category.

From the Atlanta Auto Law team

When we review a bicycle accident claim, we compare the reported impact with the location and description of the contusion. We also examine medical records, photographs, and related symptoms to understand how the injury fits the account of the crash. That review helps us present the physical harm accurately.

Contusion in Practice: A Real-World Example

A bicyclist falls after a vehicle passes too closely and strikes the rider's leg. The rider later receives treatment for a contusion, and photographs plus medical records document the injury and its connection to the fall.
